Building Up A Personal Brand

If you’re running a company then remember that one of your most important branding tools is yourself. If you can somehow market yourself in such a way that you come to embody your company’s identity, you are far more likely to succeed. This is because customers tend to trust those brands that come with a recognisable, identifiable personality that they can communicate with. A very famous example of this, of course, is Richard Branson who has built his brand around his own distinct personality. But there are many, many smaller examples of this and you could be one of them.

So here’s how to start building your personal brand:

Be an expert: Whatever your chosen field, you will be more likely to win respect and new customers if you come to be seen as someone who knows what they are talking about. Regular blogging is one of the cheapest and simplest ways to do this. Try to write blog posts that give solutions to common problems, or invite discussion on the ‘big’ issues in your industry. If you really want to put yourself out there you could also hold a free lecture and invite as many people as possible to attend. You can either hire a conference room to do this, or even host a webinar which is a good way to reach an even wider audience.

Use social media: Platforms such as Facebook and Twitter offer brand owners better opportunities than ever before to come out from behind their company name. With these, you can be relatively informal which allows you to project your personality. Your can posts links to videos, articles or anything you want. Do what you can to make yourself stand out – without being too obviously kooky – and you will find that customers are more likely to remember you and, by extension, your company. After all, you’re not a celebrity endorsing something. You’re doing things the other way round. People won’t have heard of your before so you’re building your reputation around your business from square one.

Meet People: Finally, online marketing is essential but it’s still no substitute for meeting people face to face. If you’re running your own show then networking is one of the keys to success. Attending trade shows should form a part of your yearly calendar as this will give you the opportunity to meet many like-minded professionals or potential customers in the same place. If people come to see you as a real person rather than a faceless entity they are far more likely to buy into your brand.
