Ecommerce Trends Set to Dominate the Online Retail Landscape

The events of the past 3 years have had a profound impact on how the world shops for products and services. Rather than transforming the ecommerce landscape, the effects of Covid simply accelerated what was eventually going to happen anyway.

That being, the dawn of an era where the overwhelming majority of people shop online...to some extent or another.

Figures from Statista suggest that in 2022, there were at least 2 billion active digital buyers worldwide. With further exponential growth predicted for 2023 and beyond, it can safely be said that ecommerce really is the new norm.

But what’s important to take note of is how certain online retail trends are making more of a mark than ever before on the ecommerce landscape.  Some of which aren’t technically ‘new’ by definition, but have newfound value and importance in the post-Covid era.

With this in mind, here’s a brief overview of five dominant ecommerce trends you can expect to see a lot more of in the future:

  1. Prioritising Customer Retention

First up, more successful ecommerce businesses than ever before are placing increasingly heavy emphasis on customer retention. Ferocious competition from all corners is forcing online sellers to think twice about who matters most to them – new customers or existing customers. As the latter is far easier to make a profit from, customer retention is taking precedence over customer acquisition.

  1. Mobile Commerce

Also referred to as mcommerce, mobile commerce is no longer a niche market.  If anything, it’s the single most important segment of the ecommerce sector in general. These days, people don’t think twice about spending vast sums of money via the smartphones in their pockets. In fact, it’s estimated that at least 1.2 billion consumers worldwide buy products from their mobile devices on a regular basis. Even so, it’s surprising how many online retailers still do not deliver a high-quality UX for their mobile customers.

  1. Free and Fast Delivery

One of the few things all online shoppers have in common is their desire to get their hands on their purchases as quickly as possible. Not to mention, have the option of returning them, without the traditional complications or costs. Forbes reports that almost 85% of online shoppers have chosen one company over another simply due to its shipping policy. In addition, six out of 10 expect free shipping as a prerequisite, or they instinctively take their business elsewhere.

  1. Dynamic Pricing

Dynamic pricing policies can be automated using complex algorithms, or overseen manually by ecommerce workers. Either way, dynamic pricing is essential...period. Prices must be adjusted on the basis of things like competitors’ prices, demand level, product availability, seasonal variances and so on. Sellers who never adjust their product/service prices based on these and other factors are becoming increasingly unattractive prospects.

  1. Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality

Last up, AI and AR can both enhance the online shopping experience in a variety of ways. It can show you how a product would look in your living room, it can offer your support and the form of a chatbot, and it can automatically personalise your ecommerce experience on the basis of your tastes and preferences. Remarkably, ThinkMobiles reports that more than 70% of online shoppers say they would buy more if AR was used more liberally by ecommerce businesses.
