How to Become an Influencer in Your Field
It’s no secret that influencer marketing has the power to propel just about any business to superstardom in no time at all. Likewise, everyone knows that the world’s most successful influencers are raking in massive sums of money, simply for approving the products and services of the brands they work with.
On one side of the spectrum, you have the business is desperate to work with established and successful influencers. On the opposite side, you have the influencers with the power to manipulate public opinion through positive or negative PR.
So you could argue that the Holy Grail would be for the business itself to become a successful influencer in its field. After all, who better to promote whatever it is you do than you personally?
Unsurprisingly, becoming a successful influencer isn’t an easy job. It’s not impossible, but it’s quite the undertaking. In most instances, influencers do what they do as a full-time job – not simply an enjoyable side project. Hence, running a business and becoming a successful influencer could be considered the ultimate balancing act.
Nevertheless, if you think you’ve got what it takes to become an influencer in your field – whatever feel that may be – this is how to get started:
1. Build your knowledge
Approximately 90% of your working hours as an influencer will be spent carrying out research. In order to become an influencer in any field, you first need to develop the most comprehensive understanding of the said field from top to bottom. Not only this, but you need to be so close to the cutting-edge of your niche that you can accurately predict what’s coming next. If there’s a single individual out there who knows the industry better than you, you’ll struggle to establish yourself as an authority.
2. Make your face and voice known
Even with all the knowledge in the world, you cannot simply burst onto the scene and expect to immediately become an authority. Instead, you need to spend plenty of time becoming part of the community, making your voice heard and giving people the chance to get to know you. Produce and publish strategic content on a regular basis, gradually building both your identity and your audience.
3. Network like crazy
Always remember that no successful influencer has ever succeeded by operating a vacuum. Instead, successful influencers network like crazy and surround themselves with anyone and everyone who can help them achieve their goals. Particularly in the early stages, you’re going to need all the help you can get.
4. Dedicate time to the cause
Don’t even think about approaching your influencer efforts as something like a side-venture when time permits. Just as would be the case with any other primary occupation, you need to set aside time in your daily schedule to dedicate to the cause.
5. Have a clear goal in mind
Last but not least, along with a strategic plan in terms of how you intend to progress, you also need to isolate your primary goals and objectives. It’s important to think carefully about why you’ve decided to do this in the first place and at what point you will consider yourself successful. Like with any other business venture, you’ll need to set a series of KPIs to measure your progress and performance along the way.
