How To Improve Affiliate Marketing

Get it right with affiliate marketing and you could be looking at an absolute goldmine. Sweetened even further by the fact that there are few overheads to worry about and no inventory needed whatsoever.

Unfortunately, research would seem to suggest that most fail spectacularly in their attempts to get it right.  In most instances, attributed to the fact that they dive in at the deep end, without first considering the true complexities of successful affiliate marketing.

Still, if you have the drive, determination and genuine desire to succeed, there’s nothing to stop you from becoming the next affiliate marketing success story.  Just be sure to avoid the most common rookie errors out there are proceeding in accordance with the following five golden rules:

1. Isolate Your USP

First and foremost, you’re going to need a hook. After all, if you simply offer the exact same products and services as a thousand other affiliates, why would anyone bother doing business with you?  You need to come up with some kind of USP – a reason why they’ll come see you and keep coming to you.  Do you intend to be the cheapest?  Will you offer the fastest delivery? Will your USP have something to do with the service you provide? The story behind your brand?  Whatever it is, you need to think of something that sets you apart from the competition, before you’ll have any shot at competing.

2. Focus on Content

When it comes to communicating your USP and influencing your target audience in general, content is the be all and end all. Without content, an affiliate website becomes little more than an online vending machine. It is through quality content that you have the opportunity to differentiate yourself from the competition and build authority in your field.  If you think you’ll get away with an underpopulated website with poor-quality content, you can think again. Blog posts, tutorials, reviews, instructional articles, infographics, and video clips and so on – anything and everything you can throw their way to keep them hooked.

3. Identify your Audience

There’s no point in attempting to sell products of any kind without first identifying and getting to know your target audience. For example, if you intend to focus on your immediate locality, you are going to need to think of the kinds of products and services of relevance and value to this geographical audience.  What’s more, you’ll also need to know what makes your audience tick if you’re to pinpoint an effective USP. Make no mistake about it – plenty of research and analysis is necessary, before even thinking about setting up your affiliate business.

4. Choose the Right Products

Exactly what represents the right products for your business to promote will be determined by your target audience. If there’s no demand for the product whatsoever, it’s of little use to you. If there’s plenty of demand but an abundance of supply already available, the same applies. From profit margins to procurement to delivery to long-term demand and so on, it’s not quite as easy as just thinking “Hey maybe I’ll sell this and see what happens!”

5. Analyse and Optimise

Last but not least, a continuous programme of analysis and optimisation should be started the day you open your doors. From marketing to conversion rates to SEO performance to reputation management and so on, you need to keep a close eye on every aspect of your business at all times. Pinpoint areas for improvement, identify your strengths and continue building a stronger and more powerful business.
