Should You Be Writing Blogs For Your Business Website?

Should you be writing blogs to publish on your website? You'll read a lot or hear a lot of the importance of doing this - but is it? From a SEO point if you are adding blogs with a good long tail keyword search term as the title you may find this being indexed by search engines. That you are adding new material as a blog is going to help your ranking on search engines because they will be visiting you more often is doubtful. From a customer view on your website is your blog interesting? Useful to them? Recent? So the decision is  - Is your website there to satisfy search engines or your customers?

If you can't keep up todate with adding a blog it will look like to your visitors that maybe you aren't open any more so best to remove if you are going to use your blog for SEO purposes then here are a few tips.

So many people still don’t realise that the headline is the most important part of your blog. It’s no good having witty, well-written content if nobody is going to be inspired to read it in the first place. When you’re writing your headline, think ‘Click Bait’. Your title is what sells the content and it’s what will get your blog higher up the search engine rankings. A good way to start is to think about what would make you want to click on a blog. To help you, here are some simple tips for crafting the perfect blog headlines:

Avoid Obscurity: When composing your headline, don’t try to be clever. You may give yourself a pat on the back for thinking up obscure literary references or sneaky puns but you’ll be alienating people. The idea of online marketing is to be as inclusive and reach out to as many people as possible (unless of course you are deliberately going for an extremely niche area). The best thing to remember is to be as accurate as possible as it then sets up clear expectations for the reader. Try to summarise exactly what your blog post is trying to say in just a few words.

Make It Catchy:  Of course, sticking to accuracy doesn’t mean your headline can’t be clever or pack a punch. There are lots of ways to make your title catchier whilst still getting across the essential message you are trying to convey. For example, a simple thing to do is have a little play around with alliteration as that always makes a title ‘pop’. You can also use strong, emotive words such as ‘hate’, ‘amazing’ and so on to add drama or a sense of interest. As long as the meaning is still clear and simple you can do what you want to grab the reader’s attention.

Optimise For SEO: It’s not always possible (don’t try to shoehorn in any words that sound completely out of place), but if you want to boost your search engine rankings it’s a good idea to try to get some of those keywords into your title. Do your keyword research to find out which terms are most popular for your particular area of interest and then have a bit of think about how you might be able to include one or two of them. Don’t overdo it though and try to cram too much in: the result is likely to be a mess.

Test It Out: Once you’ve brainstormed and come up with a couple of possible options, why not try testing them out before using them? Send the post with two different headlines to a certain number of people on your email list (say 20 with one headline, 20 with another). After a week or so you can look at which has performed best and this should tell you which one to use when you actually post your blog. It may sound time-consuming but it’s worth doing this if you really want to get results.
