Hard to believe as it may be but spring 2019 is here. But rather than repeating once again how time flies and all that, it is far better to consider the kinds of lessons we learned in 2018 and which can be ported over to 2019.

Once again, 2018 turned out to be a highly interesting year when it comes to digital marketing. No radical shifts or enormous surprises, but enough on-going developments and action. Most of which seems bound to continue gaining momentum into 2019 and beyond.

Which is why we have decided to dedicate a full post to the most important and revealing mobile marketing stats we think all digital marketers should know about. Some more unexpected than others, but all highly relevant in 2019.

1. According to the experts at Statista, 2018 saw the total number of unique mobile web users worldwide pass the 3.5 billion mark. An incredible statistic, but nevertheless just a taste of what is to come over the next few years.

2. The same research folks also found that when it comes to app availability, Google still leads the charge by an impressive margin. While there are some 2.2 million applications in Apple’s App store, the app library of Google now hosts somewhere in the region of 8 million.

3. By the end of 2018, the annual number of total app downloads by mobile users surpasses 179 billion. This would seem to suggest that the incredible popularity of mobile apps is accelerating like never before.

4. ComScore reports that among web users worldwide, nearly 70% of all Internet time is spent on smartphones. By an enormous margin therefore, mobile devices have become the number one media consumption devices. Something that is not going to change in the near future.

5. What is more, the research group found that nearly half of the time the average user spends on digital media is indeed spent on mobile applications. Once again therefore, this highlights the importance of incorporating the development of mobile apps in your wider web marketing strategy.

6. Android continues to dominate Apple’s iOS when it comes to overall app downloads. The guys over at App Annie report that in 2017, approximately 25 billion iOS apps were downloaded worldwide, while more than 90 billion Android apps were downloaded by users for the same period.

7.  Curiously, native apps seem to attract much less traffic than mobile websites. Nevertheless, the average web user spends much more time on native apps than on mobile websites.

8. The sheer dominance of mobile search is here to stay, with somewhere in the region of 58% of consumers now using mobile devices to start their searches for services and products, so reports Google.

9. According to reports by AUM Core, nearly 70% of consumers worldwide now turn to their smartphones to carry out their online searches, before buying products or services.

10. And just in case you have any doubt, Google continues to dominate the mobile search market by a spectacular margin. Scooping up no less than 96% of the search market, while Yahoo accounts for a paltry 2%, followed by just 1% of Bing mobile searches.
